I have a confession to make… I’ve been designing client’s homes and preaching about the importance of having a serene, inviting bedroom to wake up to….. and I’ve fallen prey to an overly cluttered not so pretty bedroom. Cue the horror music!!
Much like my room, bedrooms get overlooked more often than you think in homes because it’s the easiest room to hide since it’s not a common area to show off when guests come over. It becomes what I call the “catch-all” for anything and everything that you want to hide away like that large load of laundry you just did and never got around to folding. As you know, spaces give off energy and my cluttered space was making me feel the complete opposite of serene. I took that as a sign I needed to make a drastic change in my life and revamp my space —and I’m so glad I did. I’ve been gradually changing my décor in the other rooms from rustic to what I call natural “plant-paradise boho” and I thought what better time than now to boho my bedroom?
I looked at my current room design and weighed in on what I didn’t like about it. My two main issues were that I disliked the color palette—it felt too dark, and the room felt cluttered. I started off by decluttering and reorganizing my space. If you haven’t done this, I highly recommend the minimalist approach—less is more. I re-located the storage chest and treadmill out of my bedroom to clear up some space—it’s amazing what a tiny bit of extra space does to a room!!
Next, I created a mood board, seen above, so I could visualize how everything would look. My old color palette was navy with different variations of blue tones on top of the espresso stained furniture that I have, which made the room feel even darker. I don’t know what I was thinking when I chose all these dark colors!
In my new design, I wanted to do the complete opposite of my old color palette, so I picked light, bright and airy colors like whites, creams, blush pinks and lots of greenery to liven up the room. Boho décor is about lots of natural and handmade textures so I kept this in mind while sourcing the Wayfair site for my decor. I found this gorgeous Laci Power Loom Red Rug by Bungalow Rose that worked perfectly as the main boho inspiration piece to my room. When choosing my bedding I knew I wanted to go for something simple but super plush and comfortable because I wanted to layer up the bed with lots of throw pillows and blankets. I ended up choosing the Roxbury blush comforter set. It’s the perfect blush tone and has such an adorable girly ruffled border that dresses it up a bit. When I think boho, I think tasseled pillows. So of course, I had to shop for more throw pillows!! The pillows I chose to pair with my bedding are the 18” Interlude Square Cotton Pillows by Kelly Clarkson Home. Go Kelly!! This pillow was done right! It’s a pillow cover and an insert that looks like it won’t turn into a pancake with regular use, the cover has thick tassels, the fabric has a beautiful luxurious feel to it and…..it’s just an overall good looking pillow that will go with pretty much everything! I got it in cream so I can toss it in my living room or on my kitchen banquette when I switch up my décor. Since I was going for creams and whites I found the perfectTamara table lamp set for both my nightstands. These lamps have such a beautiful silhouette. It’s a beautiful pearly cream color lamp that sits on top of a gold leaf base and the lamp shade is such a gorgeous brilliant white. The last large item that I updated was my window panels. I’m the type of sleeper that loves to be in a pitch dark room and I have a decorative arch above my window that I wanted to cover but my last window panels didn’t quite do the trick with getting all the light out. I purchased the Morelli solid max blackout panels in white and not only do these babies brighten up my space and look beautiful but it makes my room super dark at night and blocks out all the light. Win-win!
Décor accessories are so much fun to work with and they really pull together a room by putting those final touches in the space. During my design process of creating my mood board, I decided I wanted to do something whimsical and dreamlike.. because it’s a bedroom and why not? I had the perfect idea!! I had recently bought a beautiful pair of rattan lanterns and I came up with the crazy idea to suspend them above my dresser like lighting fixtures but the cool thing about this is that it would appear like the lanterns were suspended in thin air. Lucky for me these lanterns were extremely lightweight and it was a super simple process to get them up the way I wanted them. After putting all the wall décor up, I started bringing in my beautiful greenery. Did you know that plants help with cleaning the air? They not only help liven the room aesthetically, they help create a better night’s sleep. I used to hate taking care of plants because I didn’t have a clue how to water them. Once I figured this out, I tried getting low maintenance house plants and now I’m a plant mom for life!! Here’s my three fail proof house plants: pothos, snake plants and zz plants (zz plants are toxic to animals, so pet lovers don’t say I didn’t warn you!). It just so happens, all three of these little air purifiers that I listed are what I placed in my bedroom. I have a huge snake plant resting in a corner, two beautiful pothos on each nightstand and a stunning zz plant on my dresser.
